Today, on 15 June 2026, the ITF respectfully commemorates the 24th anniversary of the passing of Gen. Choi Hong Hi, Father of Taekwon-Do.
On 15 June 2002, the worldwide Taekwon-Do community lost a visionary leader whose dedication and determination transformed a Korean martial art into a global movement. Through his lifelong efforts, Gen. Choi developed, systemized, and promoted Taekwon-Do across continents, establishing a legacy that continues to influence millions of practitioners around the world.
Beyond the technical aspects of the art, General Choi emphasized the moral culture of Taekwon-Do and the importance of its fundamental principles: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit. These values remain at the heart of the practice of Taekwon-Do and continue to guide students and instructors throughout the ITF.
Twenty-four years after his passing, Gen. Choi’s vision endures through the work of dedicated practitioners, instructors, umpires, and officials who strive to preserve and develop the art he created. His teachings continue to inspire personal growth, mutual respect, and friendship among people of all backgrounds and nationalities.
On this International Students Day, we proudly remember that we are all forever students of General Choi.
As we remember Gen. Choi Hong Hi today, we reflect with gratitude on his extraordinary contribution to martial arts and to the global Taekwon-Do family. His legacy lives on in every dojang, every training session, and every practitioner who seeks to embody the principles of Taekwon-Do in daily life.
The ITF honors the memory of Gen. Choi Hong Hi and reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting the art and values that he entrusted to future generations.
“Taekwon-Do is a way of life.”
