With great shock and disbelief, we learned that HGM Tom MacCallum had passed away in a hospital in his homeland of Scotland on Thursday evening, January 30, 2025. He was 82 years old.
All Taekwon-Do practitioners of the ITF are familiar with the name Tom MacCallum. He worked for over twenty years as Deputy Secretary General and later as Secretary General in the ITF office, back then in Vienna. He was likely the closest confidant of General Choi Hong-Hi, who even on his deathbed thought of him and his family:
“I love Mr. Tom MacCallum. I have always worried if he might die before me. In case he dies first, I have been thinking how to help his family. He has given special contributions to the ITF. I have no secrets from him. Thank you very much for what you have done. I love you!”
A greater appreciation from the founder of Taekwon-Do is unimaginable!
During his time in Vienna, he experienced and endured many ups and downs within the ITF, always able to rely on the support of his wife, Morag. As Secretary General, he was always in the spotlight of the members—both in good times and in more challenging times. In a way, he was the “face” of the ITF and shielded General Choi from many issues, always leaving a positive impression on the outside world.
For his lifetime achievments, GM MacCallum was awareded the title Honorable Grand Master. So far the only ITF Grand Master with this distinction.
A proverb says that one is only truly gone when they are forgotten. We will never forget HGM MacCallum. He will always remain in our memory. His dedication, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to the ITF will continue to inspire generations to come. Though he may no longer be with us, his impact will forever be felt in the Taekwon-Do community.
On behalf of the ITF members, I extend our deepest condolences to his family.
With respect and gratitude,
GM Paul Weiler
ITF President
