The recently held Southern Taekwon-Do Championships hosted by Trinidad and Tobago Taekwon-Do Federation was a resounding success, with 221 competitors from 17 schools across the island participating in both patterns and continuous sparring. The event was sponsored by Gatorade, Brian’s Tent Rental, and TriniChang Logistics ltd, with the Chang family serving as the title sponsor.
This was the first tournament with only students of the International Taekwon-Do Federation, which made for an exciting and competitive atmosphere. Most schools participated, with the majority of students coming from South and Central Trinidad. The highest students to medal ratio went to Impulse Taekwon-Do from Chase village, with Prem Taekwon-Do from Cunupia coming in a close second.
The Trinidad and Tobago Taekwon-Do Federation (TTTF) is now focused on athletic development, with a goal of higher participation in official ITF events. The TTTF is determined to prepare their students for higher levels of competition.
The President of the Trinidad and Tobago Taekwon-Do Federation (Ag) Sabum Paul Waithe expressed his satisfaction with the event, stating that he was really pleased with the showing of this event as it was the first time they had an ITF only event. All recognized ITF schools were invited. With 221 competitors, 100 more than they expected, the National Association had their hands full. What we need now is Umpire training and technical support. Next year, the Trinidad and Tobago Taekwon-Do Federation plans to have four such events, North, Central, and South championships, as well as one international event. The Federation would like to thank the Chang family for their continued support in hosting these events. Overall, the Southern Taekwon-Do Championships was a great success and has set the stage for a bright future for ITF Taekwon-Do in Trinidad and Tobago.
