El s\u00edndrome de Down ocurre cuando una persona tiene una copia extra parcial (o completa) del cromosoma 21. A\u00fan no se sabe por qu\u00e9 ocurre este s\u00edndrome, pero el s\u00edndrome de Down siempre ha sido parte de la condici\u00f3n humana. Existe en todas las regiones del mundo y com\u00fanmente tiene efectos variables en los estilos de aprendizaje, las caracter\u00edsticas f\u00edsicas y la salud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El acceso adecuado a la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica, a los programas de intervenci\u00f3n temprana y a la educaci\u00f3n inclusiva, as\u00ed como la investigaci\u00f3n adecuada, son vitales para el crecimiento y desarrollo del individuo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En diciembre de 2011, la Asamblea General design\u00f3 el 21 de marzo D\u00eda Mundial del S\u00edndrome de Down. Con esta celebraci\u00f3n, la Asamblea General quiere generar una mayor conciencia p\u00fablica sobre la cuesti\u00f3n y recordar la dignidad inherente, la val\u00eda y las valiosas contribuciones de las personas con discapacidad intelectual como promotores del bienestar y de la diversidad de sus comunidades. Asimismo, quiere resaltar la importancia de su autonom\u00eda e independencia individual, en particular la libertad de tomar sus propias decisiones (Resoluci\u00f3n de la ONU: https:\/\/undocs.org\/es\/A\/RES\/66\/149<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
